Discount - Half Fiction Re-release- LP - 2012
Originally put out by Kat records in 1999, 'Half Fiction' is one of the best pop-punk albums ever made. Only 500 reissued by Meth Mouth.
Adam from Katorga / I could Die tomorrow sums it up best:
"The best album by one of my favorite pop-punk/emo/whatever bands, Florida's Discount. Discount is often known as being the best female-fronted pop-punk band, and while this is certainly true, I rank them as being one of the best pop-punk bands period, regardless of the sex of the singer. Over the course of their career, Discount has released a slew of 7"s, compilation tracks, and three albums, but of all of their releases, Half Fiction stands as their masterpiece.
As mentioned above, one of the reasons this band is so recognized is that they employ a female singer, Alison Mosshart. Alison's vocals are not only powerful, but they are clear and crisp. This makes it very easy for the listener to understand her excellent lyrics, which are run the gamut from universal relationship-themed yarns to songs from the female perspective. While I enjoy more radical feminist lyrics, Discount's do not fall into this category, which makes them much more accessible to most listeners. Musically, the album is watertight and flawless. Front to back, this album is jam-packed with gem after gem, with too many to be able to choose any clear highlights. There is a reason this is my favorite pop-punk album.
But yeah, check this stuff out! It's amazing. Unfortunately, Alison went on to sing in the Kills, one of the worst bands you will ever hear. It's a shame she went from singing backup vocals on Palatka songs and singing in one of the most memorable punk bands of the 1990s to singing in a shitty garage band, all the while hanging out with the super rich and doing coke with supermodels. Fuck that shit.
